Windows Authentication Not Working For VP2014 WebClient and ThinClient

Its not clear why, but I've encountered situations where the Web and Thin Clients are working with Vault Accounts, but they wont accept Windows Authentication credentials to log in. A suspicion that I have not yet verified is that IIS was installed during the ADMS installation. (It doesn't appear to affect AVFS that would do its own Authentication and redirect calls to the ADMS.)

The symptoms are that when logging into the Web Client using Windows Authentication

WinAuth

The user is prompted to repeatedly prompted to enter their credentials.

WinAuth2

Like I say, I havent found the root cause, but on two systems, I've uninstalled ADMS and IIS, restarted the machine and installed IIS from the Advanced Configuration Guide, before resinstallling ADMS and all the Service Packs and Updates.

Its worth noting that uninstalling and reinstalling ADMS and IIS, will neither delete the Filestore or Database. but you should still ensure taht you have a restorable backup before continuing.

The same Problem\Solution seems to occur for the new ThinClient.

If you have only one ADMS Server ensure that you have run a backup.

From Control Panel>Programs and Features

Uninstall Autodesk Thin Client 2014

Uninstall Autodesk Vault Professional Server 2014

Click "Turn Windows features on or off" (this starts Server Manager)

Click "Remove Roles"

Untick "Web Server (IIS)" follow the steps and restart the machine when prompted.

On restart Start Server Manager

Under Roles Summary select Add Rule

Select Web Server (IIS)

Add the following roles

  • Common HTTP Features
  •     Static Content
  •     Default Document
  •     Directory Browsing
  • Application Development
  •     ASP.NET
  •     .NET
  •     ISAPI Extensions
  •     ISAPI Filters
  • Health and Diagnostics
  •     HTTP Logging
  •     Logging
  •     Request Monitor
  • Security
  •     Windows Authentication
  •     Request Filtering
  • Performance
  •     Static Content Compression
  • Management Tools
  •     IIS Management Console
  •         IIS 6 Management Compatibility

Then reinstall Vault Server, (Don't start the ADMS Console when it is finished)

Install the latest Service packs

Install the latest Cumulative Hotfixes

Install any Subscription Releases or Limited Editions, such as Subs Release 1 (Thin Client)

Apart from the Backup, the process took less than 1 hour and resolved the Authenticaiton issue.
